Collagen. What in the world is it?
Collagen [kol-uh-juh n]
any of a class of extracellular proteins abundant in higher animals,especially in the skin, bone, cartilage, tendon, and teeth, forming strong insoluble fibers and serving as connective tissue between cells, yielding gelatin when denatured by boiling.
Sounds kind of icky doesn’t it? But, it’s not.
I stumbled across a blog post from Predominantly Paleo in my blog reading one night about it. She mentions it in relation to thyroid health and hair health and I certainly have a problem with both of those. I’ve had thyroid cancer twice and have had my entire thyroid removed. I take thyroid supplements daily. In addition to that, I lost most of my beautiful long auburn curls when my hair fell out after a hysterectomy gone bad 2 years ago. My hair has not recovered in texture or color. But, that is a whole other blog post I intend to write soon.
I don’t sleep well. For a myriad of reasons; hormones, anxiety, sleep apnea, a snoring husband, getting up 2-3 times a night to use the bathroom, the list goes on and on. I used to be an epic sleeper for a good 10-11 hours on my own without waking up once. But that was in my teens and 20s. Now that I’m mid-40s my sleep world is so much different.
I’ve found something recently that helps.
It all started with me cleaning out my closet and coming across a flimsy eye mask I had received from British Airlines on an international flight years ago. I had never used it but wondered if I should. So, I started using it for a few nights. It was lightweight but really didn’t block out any light.
I bought this one for $6 first but didn’t like it because I felt like it covered my entire face. I then tried this $12.95 sleep mask from Bucky. It is comfortable and I love the cut out around my nose instead of going over my nose. It is made out of latex-free molded foam similar to Neoprene and is molded around the eyes so that even with the mask on you can open your eyes and it is still dark. If you were wearing it with makeup on while napping or a plane flight it wouldn’t smudge your makeup. The strap is adjustable in the back with Velcro. You can even get it in different prints.
I’m typically only wearing it on the weekends when I want to sleep past my normal 6 a.m. wake up time and don’t want Mr. Sun waking me up. I look funny and sometimes it comes off my face in the middle of the night but I just put it back on when I get back in the bed from one of my bathroom trips. Continue reading
